Bad Tasks

Posted by Matt on May 30, 2008

So I have a to do list. I don’t know when I made it, but I have it, and on that list there are two tasks that have somehow interminably eluded my grasp.

Let me give you a quick backstory on one. About, I dunno, 4 years ago, when I lived at the New McDermott my sister went to China and brought me back these super sweet chinese propaganda posters, which said things like “Lets go take back Taiwan” and “Isn’t Chairman Mao great!” or something along those lines. In any case, I wanted to have them framed, and 4 years later, still they were not framed. They were however, waaay more beaten up and in sadder condition that I would have liked.

But yesterday! Yesterday with all the verve and courage I could muster, I went to Museum Quality Framings and picked out a fine frame for them (As well as the 1924 Schoolhouse Eye Chart that Gretchen gave me for my birthday last year). I felt so accomplished that I went out and bought a sport jacket. I’m not sure why a lift in spirits of something that has been on my to do list since its inception cajoled me into buying a jacket, but it did. And the jacket is cool, even if Troy says it looks like a woman’s jacket. But that’s because he doesn’t want anyone to be happy because his heart is made of a cold black steel forged in the bowels of Hades, by perhaps a dude named Hades. That’s pretty much what it’s like.

Oh, right, the other task is to buy new tent poles to replace the ones that were bent into indistuingishable shapes by the Nevada Desert Wind. When I do get them, I bet Troy will tell me that they are obviously only good for camping above the 45th paralell and that I might as well put on a dress.

That dick.

(I’m pretty sure I just made him feel guilty, hehe, that poor guilty bastard)

You gotta re-arrange those records son!

Posted by Matt on May 27, 2008

In a fit of panic this weekend, or maybe something else, Gretchen decided to go through the momentous task of arranging and cataloging the metric popton of records that call our house a home. In the process, we found an amazing amount of duplicates, including 3 copies of Simon & Garfunkle’s “Bookends”, and only a single copy of Harvest, which means I’ve been lying to Scrapper on the Harvest census for a good two months. I’m not sure what happened there. I’ll list all the dupes in case anyone wants to claim them, but I’m not sure anyone who reads this blog has a turntable besides Troy.

Troy - I am offering you a copy of My Morning Jacket’s “Z”, but you must come up with a list of 5 things you’d be willing to trade me for said record, which is in good condition, and has a bonus track that you will not be able to find anywhere but on Side 4.

Additionally, a last minute ice cream social was pulled together, and my mom gave me tomato plants and some Frank Sinatra stamps that I didn’t really need.

Additionally, Scrapper, Faye and I played the inaugural version of “Tall Tales” a game whose rules shift with moods and involves manipulating conversations and then shouting “And then we drank!”

Then on Memorial Day, I sat around and did not go to the aquarium. That’s how you do it.

Your SIFF Schedule Please

Posted by Matt on May 23, 2008

Scrapper and I had a nice rice and spice meetup and we picked out a bunch of prospective movies at SIFF, we’re buying tickets tonight, so if you’re interested in any of the following films, let me know.

Note: We’re not getting tickets to all of these, but just putting the most interesting ones out there, plus I am for sure going to the secret festival, so if you’re interested you’ll have a buxom buddy.

Also, also, if you see more than those below the fold, let me know, we skimmed through a bunch and I added even more as I was typing these out

1001 Movies

Posted by Matt on May 13, 2008

Out of this (pretty comprehensive) list of 1001 movies to see before you die, I have scored 358. There might be more that I missed because it appears that some of the titles were translated (Like Y Tu Mama Tambien). Anyway, that’s only 35% and that’s after I made a concentrated effort a few years back to see a bunch of classic films that I’d felt I’d missed. (Somewhere in the ballpark of 150 over 4 years).

Anyway, it seems like a pretty good list, a great mix of entertaining and esoteric. They appeared to stop updating in like 2003 or something, as I’d certainly add a couple of flicks from this year to that list.

Crikey!

Posted by Matt on May 12, 2008

So it appears that the ice cream social will be delayed somewhat as Gretchen is going to playing monger at this week’s Cheese Festival at Pike Place Market. I’m thinking of doing some kind of memorial weekend thing instead, but that largely depends on what what happens with the Sasquatch Festival. We might go on Saturday or Monday or all three days.

Anyway, there is also a couple of interesting ice cream places I saw written up on the internet, so they are a possumbility as well. Crap, I just went looking for the link and now I’ve lost it.

I hate you Internet.

Cheap Rant

Posted by Matt on May 5, 2008

I’ve spent entire summers of my life drinking beers and ranting about my friends who end up getting married. I liked to snarl a bit and comment (often between drinks of a mexican brand of beer) “Marriages are for suckers and old people” and then smirk at my old man. (These rants are ostensibly at family gatherings).

Then, of course, we argue back and forth like we do and it ends up where most of those at the gathering end up mocking me for something stupid that I’ve done and in this way our family continues to function.

Also, I’m rarely invited to weddings anymore.

Anyway, its in this vein that a family member (whose identity I might not be able to publicly expose) revealed that they are getting married. And instead of producing snarls, I made a girlish sound and went for a hug instead of a cutting remark.

It was even surprising to me, I’m definitely not opposed to making an ass of myself in front of family members, but to be un-opposed to a marriage? That’s just odd.

I’d say that I’m maturing, but in response to some of my actions on Friday night, I would consider that a longshot.

Anyway, I just thought I’d write this out because today is a nice day and I’m inside. Also, congrats to those anonymous kids who are getting married, one of which is related to me. (yeah yeah, we’re a long way from Arlington now, blah blah)

But seriously, please don’t have kids. I can’t bear to think what that would turn mom into.

Oops, gave it away.
